“New Breath : Korean Dance Fusion”

2010 Ford Theatre Summer Season

Presented by BORN DANCE COMPANY

FRIDAY, JULY 30, 2010 8:30PM

This project will bring exotic Korean dances and artistic cultural excitement to the beautiful Ford’s outdoor stage by showing diverse dance repertoires in two major styles of dances: traditional and contemporary creative Korean dance.

The first half will show several important traditional dance repertoires that represent unique Korean cultural heritages such as Mudang-chum (Shaman Dance), Jindo Buk-chum (Drum Dance), Sanjo-chum (graceful movements accompanying with San-jo music – famous traditional Korean folk music) and Gasahojeop (recreated Seung-mu in the Korean dance style from the mid-1900s). In particular, Sanjo-chum and Gasahojeop will be performed by internationally renowned guest artists from Korea, Moon-sook Kim and Sook-ja Kim (both are members of The National Academy of Arts in Korea).

The second half of the evening will be composed of Korean style contemporary dances, fusion of Korean and Western dance, including Rendering Series, major repertoires of Born Dance Company such as “Tal (mask)” and “Life Journey”. Tal is a culturally recreated modern dance generated from traditional Korean Mask Dance and Drama. Life Journey is a Born Dance Company’s ambitious project of visualizing and conceptualizing bodily movements on the stage with paint. These dances were granted and invited as 2009 Unknown Theater Dance Series and well recognized by several reviewers. These pieces will be performed by excellently talented dancers of Born Dance Company. Also, some new dance projects such as emotionally inspiring duet, showing harmonious music and movement combination, and recreation of modern dance and Korean dance movements will be presented by Won-sun Choi, Artistic Director of Born Dance Company, and two collaborators, Gil-man Jung, a soloist of Korean National Dance Company and Byung-ju Yoon, a leading modern dance choreographer in Korea.

Lively movements to Korean rhythm in harmony with nature-friendly environments provided by the theater will create one great art performance in one summer night.
